If you have seen this ad in your local paper and are interested in
finding out more about Mad About Ewe, you've come to the right place!
Have a look at the Newes section to read about some of the events we
have performed at over the years. You can listen to some clips in
the Multi-media section, and see some photos too!
Mad About Ewe has worked very hard over the last 10 years, building up a
large repertoire of music, and producing several shows in a comedy,
cabaret style. As members of Sweet Adelines International we are
also committed to constantly improving our singing skills (especially in
the area of barbershop), and consequently we receive regular coaching in
Perth from Jo Oosterhoff (joanne.oosterhoff.info), and also attend as many educational
events, workshops etc as possible provided by the Regional Sweet
Adelines organization (realistically, this is usually only about 1 - 2
events a year). Barbershop is quite a technical form of singing,
and it is vital that our new Lead & Tenor be willing to learn about the
barbershop style, and be committed to regular weekly rehearsals.
A bit of information about barbershop leads & tenors:
The Lead in the barbershop quartet is the heart of the group. She
provides the colour and style (vocally) of the group, and needs to be
able to express emotively the meaning and message of the song being
sung. Vocally, the Lead sings in the mid-range, along with the
baritone, with the bass below and the tenor above. THE LEAD SINGS
THE TUNE (basically), although we do sometimes have tenor, bass or
baritone taking the tune, in which case the lead becomes a harmony part.
Vocally, Tenors sing the
highest musical line in the quartet - they are the equivalent of
a 'soprano' (generally ranging from about middle C up to G/A).
However, a Tenor needs a light and deft touch, as her part can
easily overpower the Lead melody or other lower harmony parts.
It is important that barbershop singers have a keen ear for tuning and
intonation, are able to sing harmony, and are willing to work as a
member of a team. It's a lot of hard work, but believe me, the
thrill of singing harmony will move something in you, and you'll never
want to stop!
We are very keen that our quartet be able to continue after the loss of
our former lead and tenor. Judy and I love singing together, and
we have a lot of fun at rehearsals learning new songs, working on skills
and technique, putting together shows, and generally having a good time!
We'd love to welcome a new Lead & Tenor into our lives! Will it be you?!
